My Unpopular Bookish Opinions

My Unpopular Bookish Opinions

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. It provides book enthusiasts with a fresh topic each week to discuss and share on Tuesdays, bringing the book-loving community together.

This week we are diving into unpopular bookish opinions. This is going to be a fun week with reading everyone’s unpopular opinions. I feel like I don’t have too many unpopular bookish opinions but I will share some of the ones I do have 🙂

Too Many “Special” Editions

So, every book that comes out now is a “special” edition? At this point, they don’t seem all that special anymore. Not every book that is released now needs sprayed edges.

I hate bonus chapters/epilogues

Not going to lie… I skim these. I cannot deal with all the extra stuff authors think we need at the end of books.

BookTok is not a healthy place

I honestly don’t care for BookTok. I feel like it’s not a good platform and it’s not a safe place for readers. I feel like there are a lot of bullies over there. Although, I am thankful that BookTok really made reading popular again. I loved seeing so many people find reading and learned that they do enjoy it!

Shaming people for liking certain books is not okay

If someone reads a book you didn’t like, it’s not okay to shame them for it. If someone reads a book from an author you don’t like, it’s not okay to shame them for it. And the other way around if they don’t like books you like and authors you like.

  1. I agree with all of these! The BookTok one is a bit nuancced because I do like that reading is becoming popular but some people on there are really bullies lol. And big YES for the special editions! Why does every book need to have sprayed edges?? Feels like a money grab.

  2. OHMYGOSH! I have been formulating a “discussion” post in my mind about how things aren’t “special” or unique anymore (going beyond just books), so your line “At this point, they don’t seem all that special anymore” is one I really relate to! So true. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting my list.

  3. Yes!! The amount of special editions is getting out of hand. Now, there’s several per book and it’s not even special anymore. I’m actually over it. lol

  4. If these are unpopular opinions then I fully share them with you! 😂 I have to admit that I love special editions *a lot* but I feel like they’re no longer special because there are so many coming out. Yet, with so many being produced by every company and all the book boxes, I still feel like it’s a cutthroat competition to get your hands on one?! Sometimes the book community can be pretty wild, lol.

  5. These opinions aren’t all that unpopular in my mind. While I’ve never been on BookTok, I have seen lots of people saying it’s repetative and adds nothing new to the bookish community because everyone is reading the same books and loving everything about them. Special editions are nice to look at, but if every book is getting that treatment, all the time, how special is it really?

  6. I contemplated downloading Tiktok in the early days of Booktok because I wondered what the hype was about, now I’m glad I didn’t. I definitely agree about not shaming people for liking/not liking books. I’d still feel sad if someone didn’t like a book I loved, but obviously we all have different tastes and that’s totally okay!

  7. I agree with your points! I have plenty of books I don’t like but I think that ultimately, people should read what THEY like… I also stay off BookTok, I think I’m too old or something for all that, lol. Although in terms of special editions, I disagree there but only because they’ve only just started being available here, lol. I think our market was too small to make it worthwhile but now with the popularity of certain books (Fourth Wing basically) we’ve started getting a few. But if I were in the US or UK where there’s quite a few exclusive and special editions of many books, I’d prob feel the same.
