My Rating
Welcome to Charon’s Crossing.
The tea is hot, the scones are fresh, and the dead are just passing through.
When a reaper comes to collect Wallace from his own funeral, Wallace begins to suspect he might be dead.
And when Hugo, the owner of a peculiar tea shop, promises to help him cross over, Wallace decides he’s definitely dead.
But even in death he’s not ready to abandon the life he barely lived, so when Wallace is given one week to cross over, he sets about living a lifetime in seven days.
Hilarious, haunting, and kind, Under the Whispering Door is an uplifting story about a life spent at the office and a death spent building a home.

My Review
This is my second T.J. Klune book, and I’m beginning to think it might be my last. This isn’t a reflection of the writing or the story itself—it’s more about me. While I thoroughly enjoyed The House in the Cerulean Sea, I’ve come to realize that Klune’s style feels a bit youthful for my taste.
Under the Whispering Door follows Wallace, a man who wasn’t exactly pleasant in life, as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery in the afterlife. Collected by a reaper, he meets Hugo, a ferryman whose role is to help the deceased cross over to their final destination. What follows is a tale filled with sweetness, sorrow, and unexpected joy as Wallace’s journey unfolds, leading him to the “whispering door” where he’s meant to cross over.
While this book deals with some weighty themes, it still felt more like YA than adult fiction to me, despite the mature topics. The writing has a certain innocence that didn’t quite resonate with me as an adult reader.
Although I enjoyed this story, I don’t think I’ll be picking up more of Klune’s work in the future. That said, I do have one more of his books on my shelf, so I might give it a try before fully closing the door on his writing.
