More treacherous than war… are the battles within a heart.

Perched between branches and shadows,
We watch, we scheme,
Fighting for a kingdom forgotten and forlorn.

Until we rip her away with our claws,
Our prisoner, our pawn, our plaything.

She’s innocent and pure,
Fragile and helpless…
…but oh so guilty by blood.

She calls us beasts,
Wicked and evil,
Vicious and cruel.

We are all that and worse.

One of us offers her shelter beneath his wings,
Whispering promises of pleasure,
Seeking redemption.

The other longs to shatter her into a million pieces,
Whispering promises of pain,
Seeking revenge.

Caught between our feathers,
She endures our deranged desires,
Our secrets, our lies,
Our twisted plans.

Will she surrender to our darkness,
or fight for a destiny growing ever elusive?

Welcome to the Court of Ravens, little white dove.

My Review

So I picked this book up because I’ve seen it everywhere and everyone was reading it. I felt FOMO and had to pick it up. Of course, it took Amazon over a week to get the dang book to me.

Galantia is a young noblewoman born into a sheltered life and neglected by her family. She is taken captive by raven shifters as part of the ongoing war between humans and Ravens. Two raven leaders, Malyr and Sebian, each stake their claim over her fate.

As she lives among Ravens, Galantia learns unsettling truths about the conflict and her own heritage. Sebian offers her kindness and care while Malyr alternates between cruelty and obsession. She must cope with betrayal, political intrigue, and brutal power dynamics.

Over time Galantia’s identity shifts from a pawn to a person struggling for agency. She grows stronger despite her trauma and develops complex feelings toward both Malyr and Sebian. In the end she must decide whether to embrace her strength or let herself be consumed by darkness.

This book is undeniably dark, which is exactly what first drew me to this duology. I am always on the lookout for a new dark romantasy, but make sure to check your triggers before diving in.

That said, I did not love this book as much as so many readers on Goodreads seem to. Galantia felt unbearable at times, and Sebian did not win me over either. When two of the three main characters fall flat, it really takes away from the experience.

The story itself was also highly predictable. I found myself guessing what would happen next almost every time. While it is not a terrible book, it is far from the best in the genre.

Malyr was the saving grace. He is dark, unapologetic, and truly embodies what I wanted from this story. If only Galantia had been less irritating, I might have enjoyed their dynamic more. At this point, I honestly do not want her paired with anyone.

Still, I cannot shake the feeling that all three characters will end up together in the next book, especially considering Malyr’s appetites.

If the sequel does not completely blow me away, this may be the only series I pick up from this author.
